Atkinson Selected for Phase I of Tacoma Waterfront Project

Tacoma, Wash. - Metro Parks Tacoma awarded Atkinson a $32 million contract for the Waterfront Phase I project at historic Point Defiance Park.

Atkinson, along with key subcontractor KLB Construction, will work at the Superfund site, which once was home to Asarco Lead and Copper Smelter. The team will excavate 300,000 cubic yards of hillside material to make way for a new boat-trailer parking lot and an additional 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated material that will be hauled onto the peninsula. In association with the Environmental Protection Agency, the team will armor the peninsula shoreline and cap the contaminated soils to protect Puget Sound waters. Once complete, clean soils will be placed atop the cap and landscaping, structures, and hardscaping including site lighting, prairie grass and plants, site amenities and furnishings, a plaza pavilion, a gatehouse building, and a storage building will be installed to complete the 23-acre park.

The scope of work also includes a pedestrian bridge and trail that spans the boat parking lot and Pearl Street to provide better access into Point Defiance Park. Additionally, the project team will relocate the existing Tacoma Yacht Club parking lot and improve access to existing boathouse gangways.

Preconstruction is underway and construction will begin in May 2016. Substantial completion is scheduled for July 2017.
