Skanska Awards Atkinson Underground the Cordell Hull Capital Utility Connector Tunnel Contract

Nashville, TN - Atkinson Underground will complete an $11 million tunnel excavation subcontract for Skanska.

Atkinson will excavate a 430-foot-long arch-shaped tunnel under the center of the Tennessee State Capitol using mechanical and drill and blast techniques.

The scope of work includes deepening two elevator shafts and excavating stairwell and mechanical shafts to tie-in to the new tunnel. Ground support, including spiling, lattice girders, rock bolts, and steel fiber reinforced shotcrete will also be installed. Once excavation is complete, Atkinson will place structural invert concrete throughout the tunnel and Skanska will follow-on with tunnel finishes and utilities installation.

The project will provide indoor and ADA access from the Capitol to the Cordell Hull State Office Building. It will also include a utility corridor to connect communication lines between the two buildings. Construction is expected to be complete in April 2017.
