SR 22 Eastern Segment

SR 22/I-405 West County Connector – Eastern Segment includes 2 miles of highway improvements spanning Garden Grove, Westminster, and Seal Beach in Southern California.

The primary objective of the project was to establish a connection between the existing high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on the San Diego Freeway (I-405) and those on the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22). The project's design, a collaboration between Parsons and the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), also encompassed widening the outer lanes along I-405 to accommodate an additional HOV lane in both directions, in addition to facilitating the construction of direct access ramps to the adjoining freeways.

The scope of work entailed the construction of a 1,100-foot-long carpool direct connector bridge and the replacement of the Valley View and SB I-405/EB SR 22 Connector bridges. Furthermore, the project included widening I-405 to introduce a second carpool lane in each direction and the comprehensive reconstruction of on- and off-ramps. Sound walls and retaining walls were also integral components of the project.

Atkinson demolished the 700-foot-long Valley View Bridge in just 18 hours and generated over 4,800 tons of concrete recycling. During demolition, the project team used 120 steel plates to protect the freeway surface below from falling debris. Atkinson self-performed 21,000 linear feet of drainage work and 45,000 cubic yards of concrete paving, poured 22,000 cubic yards of bridge concrete, and excavated 183,000 cubic yards of roadway embankment.
