A Train crosses the Strander Boulevard Bridge

Strander Blvd./SW 27th St. Extension Phase 1 is a grade-separation project that included the construction of a two-lane roadway westward from the SW 27th Street / Naches Avenue SW intersection to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad track undercrossing. The roadway then turns north to the Sound Transit Tukwila Commuter Rail Station. Work included constructing a shoofly for the railroad, moving the tracks onto the shoofly, installing temporary sheet pile, driving foundation piles, building a new railroad bridge (in two phases), and constructing the new roadway alignment.

The structural steel railroad bridge has a center pier and weighs 632,000 pounds. Spans include lengths of 56 feet-5 inches and 43 feet-5 inches. Work also included constructing a 32-foot-deep pump station with two 3,300 GPM pumps for controlling storm and groundwater.

The new roadway provides access to the new multi-modal Tukwila Station, which opened to traffic in April 2014.
